This temple is also known as Kukurmath, because, according to local legend, it was built by a Banjara (Nomadic man) who erected it over the samadhi of his devoted dog. Since “dog” is called “kukur” in the local hindi language, this place is perhaps named Kukurmath.
Some scholars say this theory is incorrect, but according to others, the temple was built by Guru Shankaracharya with the help of the Kalachuri king Kokalya Dev to free himself from his guru’s debt.
