History of Satdhara Buddhist Stupa
The Satdhara Buddhist monument complex, discovered by A. Cunningham, is located on a hill on the right bank of the Sahastradhara (Now called Halali River) River. The word Satdhara is likely a corruption of Sahasradhara.
Mauryan emperor Ashoka built stupas at different places across the country to spread Buddhism. The stupa at Satdhara was originally made of bricks. Subsequently, during the reign of the Shunga rulers, it was enlarged by covering it with stone blocks.
A Vedika was constructed around the stupa, evidence of which has been found through excavations. The pillars of the Vedika bear various ornaments, including lotus flowers, snakes, trees, and human figures. The names of several donors, including Indragupta, Buddharakshita, Sumay, Tavasi, Nagadat, etc., are inscribed on the Vedika.
Some inscriptions also reveal the locations of the donors, such as the donations made by the residents of Ujjaini, Daspur, Kirtigram and other places.
